AM I SHAMPOOING MY HAIR WRONG?

Updated: May 1

I have only just come to realize no-one really shows us how to wash our hair.. we just figure it out from how our parents washed our hair or shampoo adverts...

so let me tell you.

HOW TO WASH YOUR HAIR

Start by getting the right shampoo and conditioner for your hair,

please ask me for a recommendation on what you should be using as all hair types are different.

I recommend a professional brand that you can't buy at the supermarket. e.g. Wella, Redken, L'Oreal Professionnel, to name but a few.

Professional shampoo does what it says, it's more concentrated with better ingredients and you only need to use a SMALL amount. This could save money and your hair will look and feel amazing, you should be able to tell the difference right away!

PLEASE NOTE: A lot of supermarket brands have a very high content of silicone and harmful ingredients, Pantene & Head and Shoulders are the worst. Silicone acts as a poly filler, filling in your damaged hair, this gives the illusion of your hair feeling soft and healthy. This silicone builds up a barrier on your hair making it hard for colour to penetrate into your hair cuticle. This means your hair colour will fade out very quickly. When you stop using this shampoo the silicone will shed out of your hair, this will look like dandruff. NOBODY wants that, so simply throw it away... NOW.

RINSE

Fistly rinse your hair so your hair is throughly wet using warm water.

Using warm/hot water will open your cuticle and help loosen the dirt in your hair.

Be careful though hot water will also fade your hair colour so keep it warm.

SHAMPOOING

Only use a £1 size amount in the palm of your hand, rub your hands together to spread the product over your hands. run your hands into your hair gently rubbing with your finger tips in circular motions all around your scalp. You do not need to shampoo the ends of your hair only your roots/scalp. If you feel like the shampoo is not lathering/cleaning add a little more water to your hair and rub again. Thoroughly rinse by rubbing your hair whilst running water over it, you must remove all the shampoo before you condition otherwise your hair will become oily as soon as its dry. If your hair is very dirty and full of product then repeat the shampoo.

CONDITIONING

Once you have rinsed out all the shampoo squeeze out some of the water in your hair.

When conditioning it's important to only condition the mid length to ends of your hair. The mid length to ends of your hair are older, more fragile and don't get moisture from your roots.

Use a £1 size amount of conditioner rub over your hands and stroke down your hair starting from the mid lengths. I usually gather my hair into a ponytail and stroke through. Leave your conditioner in until the end of showering, then rinse.

FINAL RINSE

Once you have rinsed your conditioner out use cold/cool water, this will close your cuticle and leave your hair shiny.

TOWEL DRYING

DO NOT RUB YOUR HAIR WITH THE TOWEL.

The friction will cause damage, your hair will split and break.

Ring out your hair as much as you can, get your towel, dab and squeeze till it's just damp. Do not let your hair sit in your towel this will take all the moisture out of your hair. Put the towel around your shoulders.

BRUSHING YOUR HAIR

When you brush your wet hair you should be using a detangling brush,

Tangle Teezer or Bebop Brush.

You must always start at the ends of your hair slowly working your way up the hair brushing down. If you start at the top you will push all of the tangles together making it very hard work and you will damage your hair.

Once you have brushed your hair dab with a towel again to remove any excess water.

Now you can dry your hair or leave to dry naturally.

Thank you for reading, I hope this helps!
